History, when presented in the form of an interesting movie have the capacity to stick to the memory than when just read from the books. There are a lot of movies that have been acted in the setting of major historical events or around prominent people who wleded the hands of history to their favour but below are the list of some that are entertaining and at the same time set in a moment in history that will make us appreciate the freedom we are enjoying now.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, this movie is set during the World War II D-day. All of Private James Ryan's 3 brothers were killed in the same war he is fighting. Without him knowing, the government sent a group of soldier to retrieve him as the law dictates that he be sent back home to his family.
This movie was set in AD 180 and directed by Ridley Scott. General Maximus Decimus Meridius was forced into slavery after Comodus, the heir to the throne, decided to murder his father to inherit the rule of Rome. Knowing his father's wishes that Maximus leads the land after he dies, Comodus ordered the deaths of Maximus and his family. Maximus escapes but his family did not. Maximus then found himself fighting as gladiator and became the most popular in the arena.
Schindler's List (1993)
Set during the Nazi holocaust, the movie features Oskar Schindler, a businessman. He tried to save a lot of Jews from deaths in the hands of the Nazi that invaded the land. This movie showcases the horrifying moment in history where Jews are massacred and where hope does not seem to matter.
This movie is directed and starred by Mel Gibson. The movie is set in the 13th century. It tells of a story of a Scottish warrior who wanted vengeance after the killing of his wife by the English rule. William Wallace successfully kills the English garrison that killed his wife along with the sheriff. Inspired by his act of bravery, the villagers took heart and form what will be a one of the biggest revolution ever.
Hotel Rwanda (2004)
During the spring of 1994, a small country named Rwanda was set under the threat of genocide. As more and more people are killed each day, hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina decided to shelter his family and the villagers of Rwanda in his hotel until help comes.
The New World (2005)
The movie is set in 1912, during the maiden voyage of the world's unsinkable ship- the Titanic. This movie though showcases the love story of two fictional characters, Rose and Jack, while trying to let the viewers see what went behind the tragedy that buried the biggest ship the depths of the ocean.
The movie is set in ancient Rome and tells a story of Ben Hur, a rich merchant. He is devoted to his religion and to the freedom of his fellow. He meets his long time friend who now heads the tribune. They had a disagreement and Ben Hur was stripped off of all his wealth after an accident. He was sent away from Jerusalem as a slave but returned years later as a dignified citizen of Rome.
Tora, Tora Tora (1970)
Set in 1970, this movie showcases the Japanese-American war. It attracted a lot of international recognitions and is a must watch.
