Top 10 footballers to watch this season

The new Premier League season is finally upon us and this campaign should be as good as ever. The title race is wide open while the relegation battle has forgone conclusions. Often cited as the best league in the world, superstars grace Premier League pitches every weekend and here are the top 10 players to look out for this season:

Yaya Sanogo – Arsenal

Yaya Sanogo – Arsenal A free signing from Auxerre, Sanogo has the potential to be the next Nicolas Anelka but may flop like Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh have done before him. It will be interesting to see how much trust boss Arsene Wenger instils in this youngster.

Simon Mignolet – Liverpool

Simon Mignolet – Liverpool 1 At £9.3m Mignolet is an expensive new goalkeeper but the Anfield crowd should warm to this commanding and agile 25-year-old. Liverpool need clean sheets to challenge for the Champions League spots and Mignolet is a firm stopper.

Jermain Defoe – Tottenham

Simon Mignolet – Liverpool Defoe has scored 123 Premier League goals in 12 seasons in the top flight yet his place in the Tottenham side is never guaranteed. Punters on Titan Bet can expect him to score off the bench but start few games as Spurs target fourth place.

Nicolas Anelka – West Brom

Nicolas Anelka – West Brom Another 123-goal man, Anelka returns to the Premier League after stints in China and Italy. The Frenchman has never lost his finishing touch and runs the line better than anybody. West Brom should stay well clear of relegation with this man up front.

Andy Carroll – West Ham

Andy Carroll – West Ham The Hammers’ £15m signing didn’t do much during his loan spell at Upton Park last season but is ready to impress ahead of the 2014 World Cup. West Ham signed Stuart Downing recently and his service will gift Carroll goals, if the forward stays fit.

Frank Lampard – Chelsea

Frank Lampard – Chelsea With 165 Premier League goals, Lampard has more than any other current player and has proven his value to Chelsea for years. He rightly signed a new contract extension this summer and will net double figures under Jose Mourinho’s stewardship as the Blues aim to recapture the league title.

Wayne Rooney – Man United

Wayne Rooney – Man United The exit door is half open yet United won’t push Rooney through it. He starts the season a Manchester player but whether he’ll finish it is a different story. Wherever Rooney ends up playing he is a talent always worth tracking.

Luis Suarez – Liverpool

Luis Suarez – Liverpool Suarez is back training with the Reds side but is suspended until the end of September. He netted two Premier League hat tricks last season and will score for fun during this campaign after Liverpool further bolstered their forward line.

Fernandinho – Man City

Fernandinho – Man City City’s new £34m striker must impress during his debut season or risk being cast aside like Robinho and Emmanuel Adebayor before him. City have a cut-throat transfer policy and if you fail to meet expectations you’re quickly out the club, which is why Fernandinho needs to score plenty this autumn.

Robin van Persie – Man United

Robin van Persie – Man United He arguably won United the league last season and van Persie, top scorer with 26 goals, is 16/5 favourite to again win the golden boot. The Dutchman is the most clinical finisher in the league and United look unstoppable when he’s firing. Leading up to the season kick-off, here are some stats presented in an infographic! Premier League - TB Byline: Hi, I’m Joe Miller. I’m happily married and have two lovely daughters. When I’m not spending time with Allie and Sarah, I’m either watching football or writing about it. I’m a big Liverpool supporter, but my father-in-law isn’t – which is why we don’t get along during the football season! [smartads]
